虽然基于Verizon网络的iPhone并不是一个革命性的产品，但是对于主打商务市场的RIM来说，苹果又多了一个与其竞争的途径。GSM版iPhone已经在商务市场上吞噬了黑莓太多的份额。而Verizon版本的iPhone很有可能将黑莓的失利延续到CDMA网络上，对于RIM来说，这并不是一个好消息。
很久以前，RIM靠着优秀的电子邮件服务BES/BIS征服了几乎所有的商务用户。而黑莓易被视为商务精英的象征，就连到今天，它依然是美国国家总统最喜欢的移动通信终端。直到iPhone的出现，虽然它并没有提供像黑莓那样安全、快速的邮件体验。但基于iOS简单、优雅的操作体验，iPhone在商务应用上同样可圈可点。越来越多有这商务需求的人们开始将目光转移到iPhone上。而Verizon 版iPhone，更是使很多使用CDMA网络的商务用户有了一个脱离黑莓的选择。
这对于RIM来说并不是一个好兆头。在iPhone和Android的双重压力下，黑莓已经失去了大量的市场份额。来自comScore的最新数据表示，在智能手机市场，截止到2010年11月底的三个月里，iPhone的市场份额上升了0.8个百分点，而黑莓则下降了4.1个百分点，而根据市场曲线表明，RIM市场份额的下降还将继续。这一点同样表现在平板电脑上面，当黑莓好不容易发布它的第一款平板电脑PlayBook时，iPad已经在市场上销售了整整一年。
在过去的几年里，RIM公司一直在试图改变自己的刻板严谨的形象已引起消费者的注意力。iPhone将智能手机带进了一个娱乐的时代，高分辨率、大屏幕、手势操作等等适合娱乐的元素一下子似乎成为智能手机的标配。而此时黑莓的QWERT全键盘、2.4寸屏幕俨然变成一个顽固另类的形象，市场份额因此一降再降。
当然，RIM变革的尝试一直没有停止过。第一次大胆舍弃引以为荣的全键盘，而推出的触屏手机Storm；目前炙手可热的全键盘滑盖手机Torch；以及即将推出的电容屏全键盘手机Dakota等等，无不显示这RIM变革的决心。
但是对于RIM来说，事情可能远不如它想象的那么美好。
根据来自 UBS 分析师 Maynard Um 的预测，Verizon版本iPhone的推出可能会使iPhone在美国的销量增加一倍。虽然其他大部分是被消费者直接购买使用，但仍有很多是由企业统一购买然后配发给员工的，而这些企业用户原本应该是属于黑莓的用户。
企业选择移动通信设备时往往会考虑到移动运营商的服务、价格的竞争力以及对商务办公应用的支持情况。显然，这一直都是黑莓的优势。但是当iPhone出现之后，情况发生了很多变化。
当2007年iPhone初次发布时，很少有人相信它会对黑莓所占有的商务市场造成什么影响。在2008年，iPhone开始支持微软的Exchange协议，并加入一些对商业应用友好的特性。在2009年，推出了“Find My iPhone”功能，能够帮助用户远程定位和锁定丢失的设备，并能对里面的资料进行远程抹去。对于部分企业用户来说，这些已经足够使他们有理由放弃笨重呆板的黑莓。甚至是花旗集团这样安全意识强烈的的金融服务企业都开始为员工提供iPhone。
面对这市场一步一步被侵蚀，RIM还没有拿出一个明确的解决方案。或许它应该意识到面对iPhone咄咄逼人的气势全键盘，安全特性和BIS/BES是远远不够的，特别是现在iPhone已经不再仅仅依赖于AT＆T。Verizon版iPhone对黑莓的影响将不亚于以往所有的iPhone。
